I was recently listening to a really inspiring podcast that talked about the metamorphosis of a dragonfly and how it parallels humans going through transformation. I'm not sure how I've lived this long without realizing how bad ass dragonflies are. I want to be a dragonfly!
The Nymph Stage: At the beginning of our journey, we are like nymphs, submerged in the waters of our experiences and challenges. We may feel confined or stuck, or maybe even numb and comfortable, but this stage is crucial for growth. It's where we gather strength and resilience, preparing ourselves for what lies ahead. One of the craziest parts of this is that even though the nymph has always lived in water, something compels it to drag itself out of water and on to land, where it will ultimately emerge into a dragonfly. The nymph has never been on land or felt called to be on land. It's just like us when we have that feeling inside. That feeling that we often try to ignore or silence. The one that doesn't make sense or fit into our pre-determined plan for our life. The feeling that there is something else we should be doing. A different type of life is calling us. A nymph can't reason so they follow that pull to land. As humans, we often let our brains get in the way at this stage, keeping us stuck.
For me, this stage has been most of my life. Feeling that I should be doing something else. That I was not being true to myself. But when I would think about dragging myself outside of the water the thoughts of "what will people think", "what if I fail", "this doesn't make sense", "it will be too hard", blah blah blah. At some point, for the dragonfly and us, the pain and discomfort of staying the same becomes heavier than the fears and doubts of change, and movement starts. At least that's how it worked for me. Along with the help of a coach and psychedelics.
The Emergence: Much like the dragonfly emerging from its nymph shell, we too emerge from our own cocoons. This is a pivotal moment where we break free from our limitations, stepping into the light of our potential. It's also messy and a little weird looking to those around us. Most of us grew up being taught to live a certain way, to be a certain way. When we start to emerge, we are becoming a new version of ourselves. If you are in this process, give yourself grace and patience as you figure yourself out.
It can be really easy in this stage to go back. To decide that it is just too hard to change. For me, I feel like this is when the universe starts throwing up some roadblocks, delays and frustrations. This is the place where each of us has to decide if we have the resolve to keep going or if we just apologize to everyone in our life and go back to the water. This stage is the messy middle. It can be hard to see what is going to emerge and, suddenly, what felt confining and stifling seems safe and comfortable. This is the key moment. Will you keep going? This is a stage where coaching can make a significant impact. Helping you sort through why you are making these changes and working through the limiting thoughts and beliefs that tend to drive most people back to comfort and safety. I did this so many times. Until the time I didn't.
The Transformation: As we spread our wings and take flight, we undergo a profound transformation. Just as the dragonfly gracefully glides through the air, we too find our rhythm, embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. This is when it starts to feel good. You've been through so much discomfort and change and now you can see a clearer picture of where you're going and who you're becoming. The key here is "find your rhythm". and that takes time. So you will glide gracefully, and then you may crash. And then you'll brush yourself off and try again. Transformation takes time and ALOT of practice. This stage needs to be full of self-love, patience, and a sense of curiousity about who you're becoming.
The Mastery: Finally, we reach a stage of mastery, where we fully embody our authentic selves. Like the dragonfly, we move with precision and purpose, harnessing our strengths to inspire and lead others. We become beacons of light, illuminating the path for those who follow in our footsteps. This is true freedom and joy! I can't wait to be able to say I've hit this stage! I know I'm solidly on my way.
It's so important to remember that every stage of your journey is significant, shaping you into who you are meant to be. So, the next time you see a dragonfly gracefully dancing in the sunlight, let it serve as a reminder of your own metamorphosis and the infinite possibilities that lie ahead. Keep evolving, keep growing, and never underestimate the power of your own transformation.
